How to Choose a House Cleaning Service

By:  Cathy Green

Are you in the process of choosing a cleaning service to take care of your home on a regular basis? If so, good for you. Let’s face it, I’m certain you can think of at least 20 things you’d rather be doing than cleaning a house. Besides, if you are like most people, your parents saw to it that you definitely did your share of cleaning when you were growing up so it’s time to turn it over to someone else now.

Most people have no idea how to get started in choosing a cleaning service, so this article will serve as a guide.

a. Avoid hiring a cleaning franchise

The reason for this is simple. House cleaning franchises are generally huge, multi-million dollar, impersonal companies whose major focus is on finding people to invest in their franchises, thus earning them hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. The franchise’s #1 goal is to increase the number of franchises, thus their pocketbooks. Your home, quite frankly, is not their priority.

If you were to look at a consumer list (where consumers rate companies)you would discover that most cleaning franchises rate low on the scale and are often fired by the clients whom they supposedly are servicing.

The truth of the matter is, very few franchises take the necessary time to adequately train their workers. Consequently, the workers often do a poor job in cleaning houses. They miss the baseboards and window ledges. Dust bunnies are not noticed. Items are routinely broken. Forget windows. Franchises tell their workers to skip the windows.

Another problem with franchises is that they regularly over book. So a cleaning team may have 5 – 6 houses on their schedule to clean in one day. There is no way humanly possible that they can do a good job cleaning that many houses in an 8 hour work day. House cleaning is labor intensive and if a person is trying to clean all those houses, the quality of the work will be poor.

So what happens? They do the bare minimum to get by and they rush out of the house, on to the next job. Very few, if any of their clients are ever pleased because very few, if any of the houses they service are cleaned adequately.

b. Search out private, family owned cleaning businesses and hire one of them

Smaller businesses are more personal and personable. Because the smaller companies truly want to please their clients, they generally will take the time to put their workers through an extensive training routine so they will know what products and equipment are used and how to use them.

Again, if you check consumer lists, you will find that smaller companies consistently out-rank franchises. Remember, franchises have as their #1 goal to increase the size of the franchise. Small cleaning companies have as their #1 goal to please their clients.

UpperCrust Maids, LLC is not a franchise. We are a privately owned, family business. We often get clients who had once had franchises cleaning their homes. They tell us that they ended their relationship with the franchise based on the fact that the quality of service was lacking and their money was being wasted.

c. When a representative comes to your home to do an in-home estimate, they should do the following:

1. They should carefully walk around your home, visiting each room while taking notes

2. When they have questions, they should ask you

3. The person doing the walk through should be sharing their observations, concerns, and suggestions with you during the walk through

4. While sharing the estimate with you, the representative should summarize, then explain how they reached their estimate

NOTE: The average in-home estimate takes about a half hour

If you find that the representative moves quickly through your home, barely looking at the details (such as condition of baseboards and vents and window ledges, etc.)then that person is not truly interested in your home. Instead, more than likely, he or she is simply going through the motions in an effort to earn your business.

Choosing the right company to clean your home is serious and you should really be picky about who you entrust with that job. Remember, you might end up giving the person a key to your home. The person will see parts of your home that only your family sees. It’s a serious relationship.
